Delcam PowerMILL 2011: A 3D CAM Solution for CNC Milling

Delcam PowerMILL 2011 is a software product that runs on Microsoft Windows for the programming of tool paths for 2 to 5 axis CNC (Computer Numerical Control) Milling machines. It was developed by Autodesk Inc., a leading company in design and engineering software. Delcam PowerMILL 2011 is used in a range of different engineering industries to determine optimal tool paths to reduce time and manufacturing costs as well as reduce tool loads and produce smooth surface finishes. More than 15,000 organisations use PowerMILL worldwide. [^1^]

Delcam PowerMILL 2011 is based on the code of PowerMILL, which originated from the software DUCT that was developed in 1973 by Donald Welbourn and Ed Lambourne along with the help of Delta Metal Group. DUCT was one of the first systems to design complex 3D shapes using a computer. From 1995 to 1998, DUCT was gradually replaced with a new range of products, which covered the full manufacturing cycle from conceptual design through to manufacture. Delcam's Power Solution range of products that built upon the functionality of the DUCT suite, incorporated the latest user interface technology and offered users many new benefits. [^2^]

Delcam PowerMILL 2011 offers several features and add-ons that enhance its performance and usability. Some of these are:

  • PowerMILL Pro: includes PS-Exchange, a CAD data translator for all neutral import and export (IGES, VDA and STEP)

  • PowerMILL 3+2 Machining: where a 3 axis milling program is executed with the cutting tool locked in a tilted position

  • PowerMILL 4&5 axis machining: for 4 and 5 axis machines

  • PowerMILL Rotary Axis: for machines using a rotary axis

  • PowerMILL Training Seat/IGES Viewer

  • PowerMILL Port Machining: for the machining of tubular apertures

  • PowerMILL Blade, Blisk & Impeller Machining

  • PowerMILL Robot Interface: for programming of robotic arms

Delcam PowerMILL 2011 is a powerful and versatile software that can handle complex and challenging milling tasks with ease and efficiency. It is a reliable and trusted solution for many engineers and manufacturers around the world.

Delcam PowerMILL 2011 has received positive reviews from users and experts who have praised its performance, usability and features. Some of the aspects that have been highlighted are:

  • The new stock-model-engagement options that protect both the cutting tool and the machine from excessive loading by adjusting the feed-rates according to the extent of cutter engagement. This feature can be applied to all of the finishing and rest-finishing strategies, as well as the roughing operations, to ensure safe and efficient machining. [^3^]

  • The new toolpath editing options that allow users to easily produce multiple copies of any duplicated item, such as cavities in a mould tool. Users can also edit individual segments of a toolpath or delete unwanted segments without having to recalculate the whole toolpath. [^3^]

  • The new sketching functionality that enables users to create and modify curves on 2D or 3D surfaces, and to offset or transform curves with various options. Users can also flatten 3D curves into 2D curves, or project 2D curves onto 3D surfaces, for easier manipulation and machining. [^3^]

  • The new user interface that adopts the ribbon style of Autodesk products, making it more consistent and intuitive. The new interface also exposes more functionality that was previously hidden or hard to find, such as the control over toolpath structure and point distribution. Users can also customise the interface to suit their preferences and workflows.
